Biography

Nelly, born Cornell Iral Haynes, Jr. The 2nd november, 1974 in Austin, Texas, is an American rapper, singer, actor, entrepreneur.

Nelly joined the hip-hop group St. Lunatics in 1993 and signed with Universal Records in 1999. Under Universal, Nelly went solo in 2000 with his debut album Country Grammar, which contained the hit song of the same name. The album debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 and reached number one. Country Grammar was the best-selling album of 2009, selling more than 8.4 million copies in the United States.

The follow-up album, Nellyville, contains the hit singles Hot in Herre and Dilemma featuring Kelly Rowland. Other singles include Work It with Justin Timberlake, Air Force Ones with Murphy Lee and St. Lunatics, Pimp Juice and #1.

After the release of Sweat, Suit (2004) and the Sweatsuit compilation (2006), Nelly continued to generate several more hits. Sweat reached #2 on the Billboard 200 with 342,000 copies sold in its first week. During the same week, Suit debuted at #1 with 396,000 copies sold. Nelly’s fifth album, Brass Knuckles, was released on September 16, 2008, after several postponements. It contains the singles Party People with Fergie, Stepped on My J’z with Jermaine Dupri and Ciara and Body on Me with Akon and Ashanti.

In 2010, Nelly released the album 5.0. The lead single, Just A Dream, is certified triple platinum in the United States. It also contains the singles Move That Body with T-Pain and Akon, and Gone, a follow-up to the 2002 single Dilemma with Kelly Rowland.

Nelly won Grammy Awards in 2003 and 2004 and got a role in the movie The Longest Yard with Adam Sandler and Chris Rock. He owns two clothing brands, Vokal and Apple Bottoms. He is cited by music critic Peter Shapiro as « one of the biggest stars of the new millennium  » and listed by the RIAA as the fourth highest paid rapper with 21 million albums sold in the United States. On December 11, 2009, Billboard ranked Nelly as the third best artist of the decade. Nelly participates in the American show Dancing with the Stars from September 2020
